Summer is finally here and we are ready to ACT UP, but soooo not ready for our hair to act up. The summer can bring with it a host of problems for your hair. The humidity and heat can bring about frizziness and make it difficult to manage your mane. The heat, dust, and sweat can also cause dandruff, split ends, dryness and even sunburn! If we don’t take precautions, the weather conditions this summer could be harmful to your hair’s health. Don’t worry though, we’ve compiled a list of tips to help you keep your locks in tip top shape all summer.

1. Start the summer with a fresh cut

That’s right, let’s start summer off with healthy, split-end free hair! Your hair literally grows faster in the summer so you may need a mid-summer trim too.

2. Less exposure to the sun

Expert dermatologists say, the sun literally cooks the hair strand and can lead to dry, fried hair. This is especially true if you have color treated hair, so if you’re going “lighter” for the summer, be sure you’re protecting your hair when you’re out in the sun. Limit the exposure and be sure to wear hats and scarves to protect your locks.

3. Reduce heat and use sea salt texturizing spray instead

Take it easy on the hot tools this summer, you can get a cute look by spraying some sea salt texturizing spray on damp hair and letting it air dry into natural looking beach waves. Add a little of our heat protectant before heading out and your hair is good to go!

4. Prepare your hair for summer by using an overnight hair treatment

All you need to do is apply a leave-in conditioner from roots to ends and wrap a towel around your hair – leave it in overnight and wake up in the morning with soft, smooth hair. They key is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate sis!

5. Use a detangling brush

Be super gentle with your hair this summer. The heat may be causing some breakage so keep a nice detangling brush around and brush from the bottom to the top with soft strokes to avoid damage and split ends.

6. Treat your hair as you would treat your skin

Protect it from harmful UV rays. One quick way to add some protection is to run your hands lightly through your hair after applying sunscreen to your body and then add a few spritzes of our Cool AF Heat Protectant Spray.

7. Be mindful of pool/ocean water

It may seem counterintuitive to shower before swimming. But your hair is porous and once it’s saturated with moisture, very little chlorine will be able to enter the shaft. Imagine the cuticles of your hair acting somewhat like a sponge. If they’re filled with clean water, it’ll be harder for the pool/ocean water to work its way in and inflict damage. If showering beforehand isn’t an option, keep a travel-sized conditioner in your pool bag to saturate your hair beforehand.
